Top City With the Best Manners

They know how say "please," they offer friendly assistance to lost tourists, and they are prompt with their thank-you notes. They are the good people of Charleston, South Carolina, which has once again--for the 11th time in fact, but it would be impolite to boast about it, now wouldn't it?--been hailed as the best-mannered city in the United States.

See I would think it would suck to live in the best mannered city cause nothing would ever get done. For example you could have like 100 people waiting in a line and everyone of them insisting that the other go first. You know it'd be like:

person 1: go ahead
person 2: oh no I couldn't possibly. I insist you go first.
person 3: you guys aren't going to be well mannered without me. You two go ahead!

etc.

Has that ever been a problem maggie?

100 people aren't ever waiting in a line all at once in Charleston. And people only let people ahead in line if they should go ahead, like in the express lane when someone only has like, one thing.

I really like the way we handle doors. Everyone holds the door open for everyone. Ooh, and on elevators, I've never seen anyone try to press the close button when someone was trying to catch the doors.

And everything gets a thank you, and bless yous when you sneeze and you actually do get thank you notes.

Oh, and the tourist thing--we really will go out of our way to help a tourist. When I'm at work, we all make a big deal out of it and if no one knows, we look it up in the phone book. And out on the street, I'll call someone and ask if they know where something is.

It's great because I'm actually sort of polite IRL and everyone else is too.

IT'S A <s>STATE</s> CITY FULL OF MAGGIES
