I think its too soon to bring back a car that was decomissioned just a few years ago. But GM needs a car that doesn't suck.

If anything it's too late, not too early

Assuming the new camaro is an '09 model (that's what i've heard but i didnt read this article), that's gonna be too little too late

Just think, the retro Mustang will have been out for years by then, and will probably be due for an update/remodeling/etc, and GM will have classically but not surprisingly missed the boat once again

They need to fix the front of it.. maybe make it something reminiscent of the '70 Camaro ... now the 2009 GTO on the other hand, that looks meaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan

Yeah, it looks great. I cant wait to see what they look like once they actually start to run production. It would have been nice if they could have had it out in 2007 like the rumours in 2002 had suggested but I guess 2008ish isnt so bad.

While I don't doubt that the new Goat and the new Camaro are going to be great cars (build quality, power) GM is giong to price themselves out of the market. LIKE ALWAYS.

A v8 camaro is going to be 7-10K more expensive than a comparably equipped Mustang....and with Dodge coming out with yet another muscle car that will certainly undercut GM's MSRP by a WHOLE BUNCH, GM is going to flop yet again.

By the time they finally realize this and drop the prices and do the rebate crap that they've been doing, nobody is going to care.

Although many are willing to pay this much more for a car...they aren't willing to pay this much more for a car with GM's build quality and history. Even if they step it up and make it on par with the foreign automakers, it's too early to charge a premium for them.

GM needs to put out nice cars for a good value. And then as the years go by and they build a quality reputation back, charge full value. Not right off the bat.

Not to butt heads, but is the Pontiac Solstice not a pretty nice car at a pretty decent value?

the soltice is overpriced for what it is. looks cool, yes. but its a cheap miata like car. no power, all plastic, etc.

brandon-n
01-24-2006, 11:04 PM
i meant no power engine wise.. then i went to their site to "build one" and noticed theres a 625 buck charge for power windows/locks.

that shit should be standard.

brandon-n
01-24-2006, 11:05 PM
air: $960
antilock brakes: $200
cd: 195

add in the normal basics and its REALLY not a good deal. miatas sell for way less

Brandon pretty much beat me to everything I have to say about the Solstice.

They are supposed to be coming out with a turbo/supercharged version...but I'm sure that thing will run 30K. Nobody will buy it for that much. Heck, you can get a nice used s2000 or 350z for much cheaper.

I can think of one example similar to the Solstice.

Look at the Chrysler Crossfire. BEAUTIFUL car, but it was slow as balls. By the time Chrysler finally released the (overpriced) SRT version, nobody really cared.

Good for them though that they have more performance cars on the roster than anybody else.

Anybody seen the SRT Cherokee? That thing is one bad dude.

GM sucks. Their management is the main problem (In my opinion). I remember early summer last year, Waggoner (GM CEO) announced that he was going to spend some ungodly amount of money ($1-2 billion) redesigning their large trucks and SUVs. I think it was pretty shitty timing seeing as gas prices have started affecting the way the car consumer shops (Even Ford announced that they observed a slump in SUV sales due to high gas prices). When people started criticizing GM's decision to dump all this money in an arguably losing battle, the company announced the best discounts ever, the Employee Discount program. While their sales skyrocketed and they were able to lower their bulging inventories, they weren't making any profit. If the company wants to be successful in the future, they need to get their heads out of their asses and start making dependable, attractive, affordable vehicles. It's not entirely the management's fault, however. A lot of the problems the company is having are caused by the fact that the company is so generous. GM pays roughly $75/hr (about half in wages and half in benefits) for each employee on the production line. Toyota pays about $14/hr for each employee. Roughly $1500 of the costs of every new car produced by GM are employee benefits (healthcare, pension, etc.). At Toyota, that numer is around $180. I'm not saying that Toyota makes better cars, but I think GM could take some management advice from them Japs.

RWD sport coupes are haaaaaaawt.

Yeah but you can almost exclusively thank Daimler for the turn-around, and for darn sure the 300c

Oh well, to each their own.
As for Daimler, they do got it goin on, im glad grandma chrysler took a backseat to engineering.
I wonder if Daimler will incorporate Benz-influenced designs in the future.

whatever works :) dodge/chrysler/etc are the ONLY brands that has me impressed with their model lines currently. No other company has as many new non-shitty vehicles. So far, chevy's "revolution" is full of all ugly suck ass cars. nissan has nothing new really, yay for the new civic, but nay on the fucked up rear of the new accord. ford doesnt have much going on, nor does anyone else really.

Yeah theyve been doin pretty shitty, cant keep up with the foreign market (or domestic for that part) and dont they have some employee issues going on as well?

Jason
01-29-2006, 08:24 PM
Yeah, they are paying their damn employees too much so they've had to shut down a lot of the plants, but they still have to pay their employees when they're not working... damn unions.

Jonathan_again
01-29-2006, 11:39 PM
GM is pretty much screwed on employees pay.

There's NO getting around that. They're going to be paying out the wazoo for as long as they're still in business.

And Toyota does build better cars.
